Your Google ranking is strong. Your website loads fast. Your SEO game is on point. And yet, your organic traffic is hemorrhaging. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone — and the culprit might not be what you think.
Recent data from Seer Interactive reveals something stark: when Google displays an AI Overview (AIO) on a search results page, organic click-through rates drop by roughly 70%. Not 7%. Seventy percent.
Let that land for a moment. Seven out of ten clicks that used to go to your website now get intercepted by AI-generated summaries sitting at the top of search results.
The Numbers Tell the Story
The study found that paid ads aren't immune either — early data suggests click-through rates for paid results decrease by approximately 12 percentage points when an AI Overview is present. The only bright spot? Websites that manage to get cited as sources within the AI Overview itself see organic CTR increase to roughly 1.08%.
But here's what makes this particularly challenging: the queries most likely to trigger AI Overviews are the ones businesses care about most. Early findings suggest that question-based searches account for about a third of queries that generate AI Overviews, and longer queries — four words or more — have a higher likelihood of triggering them.
Think about that. "Best pizza near me" might still send clicks your way. But "What's the best wood-fired pizza restaurant in downtown Portland with outdoor seating?" That's getting answered by AI before anyone sees your carefully optimized listing.
This Isn't Going Away
The uncomfortable truth is that Google isn't rolling back AI Overviews. They're expanding them. Every month, more queries get the AI treatment. Every month, more businesses discover their traffic has quietly evaporated — not because their competitors got better, but because AI stepped in front of everyone.
The traditional playbook — rank higher, optimize better, create more content — assumes people will still click through to your website. But what happens when the search engine answers the question directly?
This isn't about gaming the system or finding a hack. It's about recognizing that the system itself has fundamentally changed. The businesses that thrive in 2026 won't be the ones still optimizing for 2023's rules.
The Path Forward
The data is clear, but it's not hopeless. Getting featured as a source within AI Overviews can actually increase your visibility. The challenge is knowing whether you're succeeding — because traditional analytics won't show you how AI engines see your business.
You can't fix what you can't see. And right now, most businesses are flying blind when it comes to AI search visibility. They're measuring yesterday's metrics while tomorrow's customers are already using AI to make decisions.
The ground has shifted. The question isn't whether to adapt — it's whether you'll do it before your competitors figure it out, or after they've already captured the advantage.
